DS Smith (formerly Europac Kraft) in Viana do Castelo chose Ewen to carry out an energy audit. Ewen audited the Kraft paper mill and the associated cogeneration unit and identified measures to rationalize energy consumption, which would reduce the plant's consumption by 1.9%.
The energy cost reduction measures covered various production systems, namely: the paper machine drying area, pumping of various hydraulic circuits, steam network, thermal insulation, compressed air, energy generation with residual heat through ORC, lime kiln, among others. An innovative measure was also presented, related to chip transportation and raw material pile management, resulting in an additional reduction in energy consumption with pneumatic transportation.

The audit report provided DS Smith with a rigorous overview of how energy is used in the production unit, identifying 17 measures to reduce energy costs, all of which are presented with detailed savings calculations and investment estimates, as well as the respective return.
